Kind of perfect
Tomorrow is our first anniversary. I can hardly believe it. I don’t know what to say, except where on earth did the year go? That, and I love this man.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about our anniversary. I like the idea of anniversaries. Early on, Brandon and I decided to accumulate as many of them as we could. At that point, we weren’t thinking in terms of wedding anniversaries, mind you. We weren’t even engaged yet. It’s just that we’re both quite fond of champagne, and we wanted to cultivate excuses for drinking it. This required a strategy: we would celebrate, we decided, as many occasions as we could get away with. For starters, we would celebrate the anniversary of the day he first e-mailed me, and of the day we first met. Then, as the months went by, we added more days to the list: the day we got engaged, the day he moved to Seattle, the day we got married, and so on. Happy marriages have been built on less, right? Champagne is as sturdy a foundation as any, we figured. Even if it does make me tipsy. Which is the opposite of sturdy. Anyway.
But the thing is, we made a mistake in our strategizing. We accidentally put two champagneable events on the same day. Our wedding date is, as it happens, also the birthday of this site.
We didn’t plan it that way, I swear. Cross my heart, even. In fact, we initially chose July 28 for our wedding day. A few friends who are particularly nerdy about Seattle weather had told us that, statistics-wise, the last few days of July are generally among the best - in other words, the least likely to be rainy - days of the year. So we settled on the 28th, a Saturday. But the caterer we wanted was booked for that day, so we bumped it back to Sunday. Which happened to be July 29. The date on which, in 2004, I started this site. The site that, in early 2005, inspired Brandon, then not even a twinkle in my eye, to send me an e-mail to say hello. For a mistake, it was kind of perfect.

At the time, I remember making a mental note of the coincidence, thinking, Oh, isn’t that AMAZING? Isn’t that the CUTEST? We’re getting married on my blog birthday! Eee!
But then, as quickly as that thought had arrived, another one took its place. Molly, it said, what about the champagne strategy? THE CHAMPAGNE, damn it. Also, you are a colossal sap.

Needless to say, we’re still working out the champagne issue. I think we might have to have two bottles, which isn’t such a bad idea, right? If we have one today, maybe, and one tomorrow? (Being tipsy is only pleasant to a certain degree, I find.) But whatever we do, we will raise a brimming glass in your direction. I can’t thank you enough, every one of you, for being here. Thank you for your appetite, your generosity, and your immense kindness. After four years, this space feels like a second home to me, and I hope it feels the same, at least a little bit, to you.
P.S. All photographs in this post are by the lovely, lovely Michèle M. Waite.
P.P.S. I am going to Oklahoma on Thursday to spend some time with my mother and grandmother, so I won’t be posting next week. I’ll see you back here on August 11, or thereabouts.

Congratulations! Time really does fly when you are having fun. (I've been having fun for 14 years!)
I love your photos. Beautiful and romantic.
Raising my glass to you both. A very happy anniversary, Molly and Brandon.
Your wedding photos, like your blog, are absolutely lovely. I am two weeks away from my nine year wedding anniversary and I am continually amazed at how quickly the time passes.
Quick question, now that I have four pounds of chocolate chip cookie dough chilling in my fridge, how ON EARTH do I manage not to eat it for three whole days?!
Happy Anniversary to you, Brandon, and the blog.
And thank YOU Molly for pretty much the best food blog, ever. And I ready a zillion of them regularly. Yours is the most fun, down to earth, best written, most intelligent and with the most consistently great recipes. I have a whole repetoire culled exclusively from your blog and a popular refrain in my house when something tastes especially great is - "Where did you get this...? Oh, of course!" Then all together "Orangette!" Followed by laughter and more happy eating. Also we recently went to Paris for the first time with a list of recommended Orangette spots in hand. We never would have found Chez H'anna without it!
So congrats to you and Brandon and congrats to us all for having the good taste to be Orangette fans. Here's to many more years of wedded and culinary bliss!
Happy Anniversary Molly and Brandon!! Enjoy Oklahoma, Molly! I don't know who I will get my weekly foodie fix from, but I'll try to survive. =]
Congrats! Doing anything special for the special day? I do wish you many more anniversaries to come. Your spirit of celebrating and remembering each little landmark is something I do, though I usually just happen to remember on a particular day what was going on just a year before. You have inspired me to make more of an occasion of these little anniversaries.
Oh, you two. Champagne for days, for such wonderful anniversaries. I just love the hell out of you both.
You know who expresses everything far better than I ever could? The guy whose dulcet tones I imagine are serenading you as you dance in that dreamy photo up there. Shooby, take it away:
Shoo soo soo waah
Shwee daa
Shraa laa laa wee wheet doo saaw
Shraa laa laa haaw
Dweet dee blaa
Dweet dee saaw daa raaaw
xo!
Congrats, Molly! Your blog is fantabulous (I'm sure you're tired of hearing that all the time)! It's just too bad you're married bc I have a friend that reads your blog and loves it (don't worry, in a non-stalkerish way). I can't wait to read your next article in bon appetit!
Congratulations and happy anniversary!
Cheers,
Rosa
Happy Anniversary to you and Brandon and to your lovely blog!
Happy Anniversary to you and Brandon and Orangette :)
Happy Anniversary!
Oh Molly, congratulations! Those photos are beautiful. You guys are so wonderful together, it kind of makes me believe a little more that everything will all work out with the guy I love, who lives on the opposite side of Australia :)
congratulations on both anniversaries!! your wedding pictures are dreamy and gorgeous :) enjoy your trip...
Congratulations on both the blog AND the marriage anniversaries - May you have many many more to come.
I'm only a recent lurker so excuse my lack of comments - but your story is so fairytale perfect. Who would have thought you could find the perfect guy via a blog! :-D
Keep on celebrating one another! happy anniversary of so many good things.
I would love the opportunity to meet you for a bit while you're here (in fact, you should come to the Edmond Farmers' market on Saturday morning...). For one so young - my oldest is only a couple of years younger than you - you have a wise voice, and have inspired me to cook with meaning again. Happy Anniversary, Molly and Brandon, with many, many more to come!!! (Mine with my wonderful Bob is Friday - our 27th!)
Happy anniversaries!
Congratulations!
You can always remedy the conundrum by having two bottles of champagne from different years!
Beautiful pictures.
Lord, Molly, the photos are so gorgeous! I sigh in (good-natured) envy every time!
Happy wedding and blog anniversaries!
And what a grand wedding it was! Happy wedding anniversary, and whatever other happy days you are celebrating!
Lovely photos, there. Your photographer did a great job.
Cheers all around!!
On almost every Friday since our wedding day, January 20, 2006, my husband and I have a glass (or more) of something fizzy - we call it Fizzy Friday, because you really can't have enough excuses to drink champagne (or cava, or prosecco...)
Here's to many more reasons to celebrate for you both.
Happy Anniversary-- enjoy the champagne.
Hi Molly,
I stumbled upon your blog a little over a year ago - just in time to hear your sweet story (I love that there were muffins and small appliances involved)- and haven't stopped reading since. Hope you won't be alarmed if I admit to considering you a friend :)
Congratulations on all your anniversaries and can't wait to read your cookbook!
Dina
p.s. I received a decent amount of undeserved credit for your lovely apricot tart last weekend! hee hee
that is a very sweet story!!
I love your blog.
Happy Anniversaries! I have never commented on your blog before, but I read it every week and I have to send you good wishes on these auspicious days. Your blog really is a second home for me: your stories and recipes have taught me to cook over the last year, which was also my first year of being (incredibly happily) married. We have had so many delicious meals from Orangette -- thank you for everything!
Susan
Happy anniversary & enjoy your trip! We're coming up on our 1 year anniversary and I agree, where does the time go? Love the photos as well :)
CONGRATULATIONS! your wedding photos are just lovely! here's to many more years!
Happy anniversary indeed!
I'm afraid the last days of July here in Oklahoma will not be nearly as enjoyable as they are in your neck of the woods. We're dying down here in the 100's! I recommend packing lots of sundresses and scheduling indoor activities!
Is it possible that I am only 26 and already giving weather warnings? Yikes!
Oh, and one more thing...finally tried your gin and tonic recipe this week. It was the perfect fix for this Oklahoma heat! Best g&t I've ever had.
I can't believe you've been married a year! Boy, time sure has a way of passing, huh? Sneaky, sneaky time.
Happy Anniversary to the lovely couple and the inspiring blog.
Congratulations on both of your anniversaries! Have a wonderful celebration.
Wow - a year already!! Congratulations to the three of you (you, Brandon, your blog) on your anniversary - it's been really lovely being a part of your lives. Thanks for letting us in!
Happy anniversary, you two lovebirds! And happy birthday to Orangette, which is, indeed, a top-notch must-read every Tuesday. Or any other day of the week, for that matter.
Eep! Congratulations! I LOVE that so many people have weddings in the summer. I feel such camaraderie with everyone else who has been celebrating anniversaries all month long. It was our one-year a few weeks ago and it was wonderful. I hope yours is as delightful.
this is lovely! your wedding photos are adorable. happy anniversary! (x2!)
Happy First Wedding Anniversary, Molly! I'm coming up on 2 years already with my hubby this November. Time really does fly when you're immersed in newlywed bliss! ;-)
How serendipitous that your wedding anniversary falls on the same day that you started the very blog that brought the you and Brandon together. So romantic! My husband and I met through the web as well, only to discover that we lived in the same neighborhood and had gone to the same high school--at the same time, no less! Needless to say, your love story hits close to home. Probably why I love reading your blog so much! I really look forward to reading every week, and I'm looking forward to your upcoming cookbook, too. Best of luck with that!
sparkling wine for a sparkling story!
congrats to you both & your joy.
I fully support anniversary celebrations, as you know, so keep 'em comin'!
Enjoy this one and have a lovely time with your mother and grandmother next week!
You have a million comments to read here but I must let you know...my finace and I celebrate weekly champagne wednesdays. This is how I described it on my blog:
I loved champagne before Paris, but I understood it only after.
If you happen to be in Paris right this minute - read no further. The city demands celebration. Champagne should be taken daily and in excess.
But if you are at home or at work, only dreaming of your next two weeks in… then consider what champagne can bring to your daily life. For us, it’s ritual. Champagne on Wednesday. Instead of wine. Instead of separate. Instead of dishes. Instead of dwelling on the inevitable ritual of back-to-work in the morning.
We highly recommend it.
Sublime results include: inner effervescence, kissing instead of watching TV, an instituted sense of adventure.
Enjoy
Jen
Congratulations! That's so cool. I really enjoy your blog. I hope life brings the two of you many more happy years!
Awww...I usually just enjoy your blog silently, but I have to give you double congratulations!
Your wedding photos are gorgeous, by the way.
Well I was wondering why I was getting a gazillion hits on my blog today... Thank you Molly and Brandon for the honer of documenting your most perfect day. I still get comments on the infamous red couch. Happy Anniversary! Was that really a whole year ago???
I believe the answer to your "problem" is:
AM: Champagne Brunch
PM: Evening Champagne Celebration
I love Champagne Brunch. Is there anything more relaxing and festive? When I have people over for brunch there's always champagne. Even when my boyfriend's family was in town. I think they thought we had a drinking problem.
Cheers!
Happy anniversary to both you two and Orangette!
You both look beautiful! I love the casual elegance of the photography. Happy Anniversary!
Happy Anniversary and Blogiversary. A perfect excuse for me to go have some champagne with my husband!
Congrats you two!
The commercial with the story about how you kids met is still one of the sweetest things ever.
My future in-laws have a strategy: celebrate as often as you can, however you can, with as many family members as you can. They stock Champagne in their pantry and the slightest anything is an excuse to celebrate. They are, I should add, the most happily married couple I know. Celebration isn't for the faint of heart! :)
Hope you enjoy your time in Oklahoma! I live in Tulsa, and it's miserable hot right now, with nary a cloud or rain in site, but it's a wonderful excuse to eat nothing but tomato salads for many meals in a row! And Happy (double) Anniversary!
happy happy happy! good things indeed
Congratulations! I've been reading your blog for many months, and am pleased to see how happy you are with your life. may there be many more anniversaries to come!
Congratulations on all of your anniversaries. Your wedding photos look beautiful and your blog is, always, gorgeous. Mental note to self... must cultivate more excuses for champagne drinking!
Congratulations Molly and Brandon! And thank you Molly for your inspiring blog and feeding me with your amazing writing every week for the last couple of years.
HapiBlogging to you my friend! Have a nice day!
Wait, wait -- what about seeing your cousins in OKC, too!?!?
Happy Anniversary! Beautiful blog, post and pictures. I have been married 15 years and I'm still in awe of how lucky I am and how fast time goes by...
Congratulations!
It's my first time leaving a comment, but that post was beautiful and I could not help myself.
Enjoy the champagne.
Happy Anniversary to both events, at different times of the day if you would like. After all, there is nothing wrong with mimosas for brunch, and then plain old champagne after dinner, yes?
Hi Molly! Happy Anniversary to you both! Well: I can't help you with your lucky champagne conundrum, but I have to say; I think I've recommended your site to just about half of the state of New Hampshire by now, and some folks back home in Maryland, too! I just love it so much - the recipes never disappoint. Coincidentally, my father and best friend both share the same birthday- 7/29! There just must be something special about that day. Cheers to you and Brandon!
I agree that champagne is the key to a good marriage. Keep finding reasons to toast each other and you will never go wrong.
Happy Anniversaries!
Happy anniversary! What beautiful photos.
(And happy blogiversary, too!)
super cute photos. congrats!
These photos are so beautiful - you two are beaming!
Congratulations on your anniversary and your blog birthday. Two amazing things together, Molly.
Congratulations on your one year! I can't believe how time has flown. I remember reading about the wedding and that felt like yesterday!
It seems like you'll be in Oklahoma while I'm in Seattle. I'm expecting a new niece or nephew any day now and I'm going there next week to visit!
Happy anniversary and blogiversary! You guys are adorable beyond words. Lisa
here's to anniversaries, blog birthdays and most of all champagne! cheers to you both!
Congratulations,
It's so funny, I have a similar story. I met the love of my life on the internet. He was East Coast (NY) and I was West Coast (CA). We have been together for 11 very happy years. It's a great feeling when you connect with right person. Wow and now we are living in Hawaii!
Congratulations!!! My anniversary is July 29th also....we celebrated two years yesterday!
Congratulations.Happy anniversary. It s a nice post and really nice photos. Great recipes too.
HAPPY HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! Congratulations. Champagne away!
I have been a reader of your amazing blog for a long time now but have never commented before today. Your writing has bewitched me. I joyfully read every word...and your recipes never fail to interest me. (Which is kinda weird because I can't even cook a piece of toast!)
I have been totally enamoured with your romantic love story. There is nothing I like better than to hear about happy people happily in love.
Congratulations to you, your husband, your blog, your brilliant life. You deserve every happiness!
P.S. I named my eldest daughter Molly (she is now 21 years old) and every Molly I have met since is an incredible woman.
Congrats on both of your anniversaries!!! Let's get together with the dogs and celebrate. Have a good trip visiting family. We'd love to see you two, and Jack, soon.
Kristen
29 july must have perfect hearts scribbled around it - we celebrated 7 years on the 29th... hope you both had a lovely day indeed...
You have such a lovely blog. Happy Anniversaries! It's wonderful you have so many things to celebrate, bubbly and all.
Isabella
May the next year be as full of champagne, butter, and love as the last.
Your wedding photos are stunning! Congratulations and happy anniversary!
I would drink bubbles every day if I could. Celebrate both big events with a glass and a toast.
I love how the pictures shows off Brandon's hair! Congratulations and congratulations!
Congratulations on your dual anniversary! Bravo!
How romantic and dreamy Molly.
Cheers to you, and to you and Brandon!
Hello! I started reading this blog recently, it was a shared link from JD's "Get Rich Slowly" finance blog.
That's a sweet story! Congratulations on both your wedding and site anniversary! Those wedding pictures are wonderful.
Happy double anniversary! A fabulous husband and an award-winning blog. Both are excellent reasons to drink champagne!
It's true, time REALLY does fly. I forgot that how I found your blog was when I was planning my own wedding...and now that we are coming up on our one year anniversary I can't believe how fast time has flown by.
Congratulations on both life-changing anniversaries!
Best,
Brooke
Congratulaions to you!! (I know youve gotten like thousands of these). I know nothing about marriage so i dont know what else to say :) Happy Anniversary. Oh and maybe, just this once, you could have the two bottles in one day.
Congratulations Molly, to you, Brandon and the blog. Perhaps I'll bump into you while you're in Oklahoma this week. It would be an honor. If you happen upon any foodie news or a new restaurant while you're here, I would love to hear about it. I'm always looking for new places to go.
Lovely photos, and congrats!
Congratulations to you both. Your recipes are so helpful. We have cooked a few of them at Bubby's in NYC, and they are always a big hit. If it is possible, I want to email you, too. I'm already married, but I think it would be an interesting exchange... is it possible to do that? I'm easy enough to find at this address: ron@bubbys.com. I want to send you my pie cookbook for all the excellent things you give out.
oh happy days! molly and brandon a very happy anniversary to you both. and happy birthday orangette! enjoy your oklahoma visit. xoxo
congrats on your first year! how was the champagne?
awww... what a sweet posting. congratulations!
What a lovely post, Happy Anniversary! :-)
Happy Anniversary!!
I have an unrelated question . . . as I could not figure out how to find your email address, I'll ask you here. Have you ever been to Ann Arbor, MI, or have you heard of any great restaurants there? My husband and I are taking a road trip and I would love some guidance on where to eat.
Thank you!
Jessica

Happy Anniversary Mr and Mrs Orangette!
Michele did our wedding photography as well. She is sheer genius! Congratulations you dear culinarian. I have been enjoying your blog and recipes and suffered delightful pudgification at their hand. THank you!
Awe....so sweet. Congratulations and Many More!!!
My friend sent me a link to your blog -- I got married at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal the day before you! And we did happen to pick July 28 because of the statistical chance for sun (although it was a little drizzly in the morning). Your post really made my day. Happy anniversary (a week and a half late)!
Congratulations! What beautiful remembrances, both in prose and images. I'm a recent devotee of your blog (the chocolate chip recipe made everyone at the office think I'm a gourmand) and am charmed by your and Brandon's story.
Molly I love Orangette! Your recipes are delicious and your beautiful life is so inspiring! Congratulations on both anniversaries! Enjoy your champagne. ;D
Found your blog when I was blog-hopping and wow!! am bowled over. You are so talented!! Going through your archives. Bookmarking you!!Your blog is delicious.

Happy Anniversary to you both! After 10 years, we still feel like it were our first year...and yes Champagne does not need "zee" occasion. Happy celebratig!
Happy Anniversary! Very beautiful story. As soon as I read you say, "I love that man", my heart melted.
Congratulations! I'm a reader of your blog. I'm so happy for you. :)
Congratulations! I love the photos... you look gorgeous. Congratulations and keep up the amazing work on this blog! I love reading everything you have to say...
Pretty photos!
Here's to celebrations! My husband and I have saved the corks written with the date and event from special bottles in our 20+ years together. We've grown from a few pathetic corks in a jar, to a brimming bowl filled with memories from engagement, wedding, births of children, birthdays, promotions, vacations - the list goes on and on!. I love to look through and remember each one!! It's a wonderful tradition! Happy anniversary!
Congrats on your 1st year together as hubby and wife! And here's to many more ...
Cheers!
I also usually silently read your excellent blog, but this post left me in tears! Happiness to you both :)
Photos are soooo beautiful!
Gorgeous pictures! Congrats =)
